Bustling market towns, traditional fishing ports, medieval villages, ancient stone circles and obelisks are dotted all over this most magical celtic area. Like the historic, beautiful City of Quimper, the capital of the Cornouaille county.

Think tempting markets, a stunning medieval Cathedral and charming little back streets. While you're in the area, potter around one of the quaint Faiencepotteries or join in the Festival de Cornouaille in July, Brittany's biggest celebration of Brêton culture.

For the more active, there are some of Europe's top surfing and bodyboarding spots with the long white sandy beaches of the Bay d'Audierne stretching from the famous La Torche right up to the unmissable Pointe du Raz, (France's version of Lands End).

What to eat and drink in North Brittany

Although the regional identity is very strong, the Bretons certainly share the French obsession with food. The seafood is legendary with langoustines, oysters, crabs, lobsters, prawns and all manner of delicious fresh fish.

You'll also find creperies just about everywhere offering cheap, filling and tasty treats from savoury specials to indulgent sweet extravaganzas.

Crisp, dry Muscadet is the only wine produced in Brittany. Lively and acidic, it goes fantastically well with the regional seafood including Moules Marinières and oysters from Cancale. Brittany's scrummy cider also has an appellation d'origine controlée.

What to see and do in North Brittany

The magnificent Benedictine Abbey of Mont St Michel on its rocky islet. The 200 Menhir Stones near Carnac predate both the pyramids and Stonehenge. The buzzy walled city of St Malo is especially attractive. And if you need some educational excitement head for the Oceanopolis Aquarium in Brest.
