Thomson al Fresco

Camping Holidays in Italy

We have chosen four fabulous Italian regions; Lake Garda, Lazio, Tuscany and the Venetian Riviera, each with Thomson camping holiday options to suit any style. All these amazing Italian camping regions are very different, but each very special.

What do eat and drink in Italy

Italian street markets, butchers, bakeries and greengrocers make buying food a pleasure; the unforced growing of local produce makes eating it even better. In trattorias, try specialities like 'tortina di carciofi' (baked artichoke) along with canneloni and pizza. Savour mozzarella and gorgonzola cheeses.

Enjoy the best accompaniment to any al fresco meal here - delicious Italian wines such as pinot grigrio, frascati and, of course, chianti.

In Italian, fettuccini means ribbons, capelli d'angelo means angel's hair and the word pasta means paste, meaning a combination of flour and water.

What to see and do whilst camping in Italy

Whether you're taking a short break or one of our camping holidays in Italy, there's lots of adventures to be had. Romantic rural Tuscany with its rolling hills is home to splendid villas and sleepy farms. Vineyards are sun-soaked on south-facing slopes, silver leafed olive groves shimmer in shade, and magical medieval towns  are colour-washed in earthy tones of ochre, amber and umber. Here lies renaissance Florence with its academic and artistic air, together with the walled city of Siena and San Gimignano, the medieval 'city of beautiful towers'.

If Italy is the best place for sightseeing, the Italian Lakes are the top spot for scenery. Lake Garda is the largest, wildest and most impressive.  The lake sits amid great walking country, its western shore a heady-scented blend of herbs, citrus and cypress groves, and its waters edged by a healthy sprinkling of fishing ports and pretty resorts.

On the Adriatic coast  you'll find Venice, the living Canaletto of palaces and piazzas. Here too is Treviso, poetic and picturesque, and the pilgrimage place of Padua. But best of all, this is all within easy reach of the sea and long stretches of sandy beach.

And so to Rome, the Eternal City, spread across seven hills. Its ancient and artistic relics are too numerous to mention. And Rome is an easy day trip from I Pini Family Park campsite.
